He was a dreamer and certainly an achiever, has the dexterity to strike the iron when it is hot. Sunil Bharti Mittal is full of passion and it shows in his work and always believes in transparency in work and had a strong and wide vision. He was aware of the fact that the Indian economy was at he doorstep of becoming one of the largest known economies in the world. He launched the “Airtel” brand of mobile telephone services in Delhi in 1995. Presently Airtel brand is the leading and biggest mobile phone brand in the country.
But his path to success was definitely not a bed roses. A true leader maintains his tranquility and does not take decisions under stress. Lot of initial investment was required in the telecom business but did not have sufficient earnings as it did not have many subscribers. He faced many challenges and vicious competition.
STARTING PHASE OF SUNIL BHARTI MITTAL IN BUSINESS
As an entrepreneur, he ventured his first business in April 1975, with a capital investment of 20,000 rupees which he borrowed from his father. The business was about making crankshafts for local bicycle manufacturers.
In 1980, his next venture was an import Enterprise named Bharti Overseas Trading company in which he was assisted by his two brothers.
In 1981, he imported thousands of Suzuki Motor’s portable electric power generators from Japan which the then Indian Government banned.
Then he started assembling push button phones in India replacing bulky rotary phones. In the early 1990s, Sunil was busy in making fax machines, cordless phones but due to imposed ban on the import of gensets, suddenly he was out of business. Then later on he started marketing telephones, answering fax machines under the brand name Beetel. Then in 1995 his company Bharti cellular limited (BCL) was formed which offered cellular services under the brand name Airtel , The company very soon made many customers.
His outlook in his life was extensive and he had belief and hope in future entrepreneurs. He had a flexible outlook in life. He believed that sometimes the decisions made by entrepreneurs may not prove that right.
His story as a businessman is discussed by him mostly by his interviews or talks that he gives. Mittal urges aspiring entrepreneurs to be zealous about their work as this is the only way to keep their motivational levels. He advises giving entrepreneurs to give more attention on growth and less on profits to improve the credibility of their business.
He is regarded as a family man as he maintains good relationship, not only with his family but the man of wisdom maintained the good relationship in business as he always believes that relationship should not be given up for money.
